In recent years, alkaline water has gained popularity as a supposed health potion, claiming various benefits such as improved hydration, detoxification, and even cancer prevention.  But what exactly is alkaline water, and does it live up to the hype?

What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is water with a higher pH level than regular tap water.  The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 considered neutral. A pH below 7 is acidic, while a pH above 7 is alkaline or basic. Regular tap water typically has a pH of around 7, while alkaline water usually boasts a pH of 8 or 9.

The Natural Phenomena Behind Alkaline Water:

The alkalinity of water is often influenced by the presence of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. 

These minerals can raise the pH level of water, making it more alkaline. Hence, natural springs, and rivers have water naturally made alkaline by the minerals present in them.

Digestive Impact:

Consuming highly alkaline water may have digestive implications, as the stomach requires an acidic environment to break down food. The pH value in the stomach is highly acidic i.e. about 1-2.  

Drinking excessively alkaline water could potentially neutralise stomach acids interfering with the digestive process.

While enthusiasts praise its potential health benefits, the scientific community remains cautious due to limited evidence supporting these claims. 

While staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet is essential for overall health, the specific advantages of alkaline water over regular water remain a matter of ongoing research.
